This study quantified ammonia’s role in springtime particle formation over the United States using chemical transport modeling, size-resolved microphysics, and observations. Under the modeled conditions, ammonia’s participation in nucleation accounted for 63 ± 15% of particles larger than 10 nm and 16 ± 10% of cloud condensation nuclei at 0.4% supersaturation.
